Fruits Basket (2019) Review

Overall this is a fantastic anime adaptation! I love the new art and animation! And how closely the anime follows the manga!

My major grips with the series are:

  1. The music:  the old anime series OP song "For Fruits Basket" was iconic and made a lot of scenes more heart-moving. The new OSTs cannot compare. I wish they had kept the old song and play it during some important moments. Also, there's 1 OST ("Autumn Sonata") that sounds beautiful to me, but it seems that they preserved it specifically for Yuki's Fanclub moments. I don't think that such Fanclub deserves this OST; there's nothing beautiful about their obsession.
  2. I watch it in Japanese. Most of the female voices in this anime are extremely high-pitched (than any other anime I've watched) and thus, unnatural. For a series like Fruits Basket, the voices should convey SINCERITY and the characters' conversations should sound NATURAL. By making the voices high-pitched, the anime lost this crucial element. Also hurt my ears. Thus I had to watch this anime in a lower volume than usual. In the old anime, Tohru's voice sounded very soothing. Studio TMS should learn from Studio Ghibli on how to make the characters' conversations sound NATURAL just like in real life.
  3. They should've shortened the scenes of Yuki's Fanclub and Tohru's 2 friends (Hana and Uotani). They aren't interesting and mostly annoying to watch. I don't care about these characters;  I fastforwarded most of their scenes.
  4. I find Tohru's parents' backstory interesting and it explains what made Tohru who she is. The studio skipping it just because some fans complain about it is silly.
